The Wagging Green Story
6 years ago, Sonya and Sean fell in love with a spunky little Red headed Jack Russell puppy named Gidget. On the way home, they stopped at the local pet shop to buy her food, a collar and leash, toys and treats. They quickly found that she hated wearing her collar! Every time she wore it, she itched at her neck. Sonya and Sean bought her leather collars and nylon collars, thick collars and thin collars and she still kept itching! Sonya noticed that all the collars they could find were either hard or stiff, or made with synthetic fibers. People don’t wear stiff fabrics and all synthetic fibers! That would be hot and uncomfortable! Still, she could not find a comfortable, breathable collar for her little puppy anywhere! She decided to make one out of cotton Flannel fabric. One turned into 10 as friends and family started asking for them, and her first company, If It Wags, was born!
For 5 years, Sonya handmade soft, comfortable collars for dogs and cats using cotton fabrics and webbings to create stylish, fun designs. And yes, Gidget stopped itching!
In 2008, Sonya and Sean were having a conversation about the importance of sustainable fibers, recycling, and investing in renewable resources to create a cleaner and safer earth. Sonya suddenly had the idea of making eco friendly pet products! After research, it became clear that Bamboo fiber is the perfect material to create pet products with. It’s organic, renewable, soft, strong, bio-degradable, naturally anti-bacterial, and hypoallergenic! The only problem? It was not possible to just buy quantities of bamboo webbing because it didn’t exist! With more research, Sonya was able to understand the process of making bamboo into a fiber, and fiber into a webbing material. Wagging Green was then able to file a patent for the process of creating bamboo fiber webbing! Sonya now works with a factory that owns the necessary equipment to produce webbing and has created the first bamboo fiber webbing! It even has a 2000lb breaking strength, which is comparable to standard nylon webbing, stronger than cotton, and it doesn’t stretch like hemp. Lucky Pets!
The next challenge was to create the perfect designs. One night while dreaming, the idea came to Sonya! She woke up and sketched a rough city, a sun and a bee and wrote “give back- environmental causes, environmental designs” into her dream journal. It was perfect, exactly what we needed to make the line stand out! They could be original, cute, fun, and at the same time give back to our earth AND educate their customers about the importance of caring for the environment! With this idea as the foundation to work with, the designs were easy to create as there are countless important environmental causes, and with Sean’s design skills the complete vision came to life! Their company was born!
They feel that their product is on the cutting edge of the next phase of the merchandise revolution because it’s not just eco friendly, its also is sustainable and has less impact on the environment than traditional petroleum and cotton based products without giving up style and strength! Every product and company CAN be more conscientious and still be profitable.
Saving the Earth one dog at a time, that’s what they are all about!

Facts about bamboo
Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of the bamboo grass. Bamboo fabric has been growing in popularity because it has many unique properties and is more sustainable than most textile fibers. Bamboo fabric is light and strong, has excellent wicking properties, and is antibacterial. The use of bamboo fiber for clothing was a 20th century development, pioneered by several Chinese corporations.
Bamboo fiber resembles cotton in its unspun form, a puffball of light, airy fibers. Many companies use extensive bleaching processes to turn bamboo fiber white, although companies producing organic bamboo fabric leave the bamboo fiber unbleached. Wagging Green fiber is organic, unbleached. To make bamboo fiber, bamboo is heavily pulped until it separates into thin component threads of fiber, which can be spun and dyed for weaving into cloth.
Bamboo fabric is very soft and can be worn directly next to the skin. Many people who experience allergic reactions to other natural fibers, such as wool or hemp, do not complain of this issue with bamboo. The fiber is naturally smooth and round without chemical treatment, meaning that there are no sharp spurs to irritate the skin.
Bamboo fabric is favored by companies trying to use sustainable textiles, because the bamboo plant is very quick growing and does not require the use of pesticides and herbicides to thrive. As a result, plantations can easily be kept organic and replanted yearly to replenish stocks. The process of making unbleached bamboo fiber is very light on chemicals that could potentially harm the environment.
In textile form, bamboo retains many of the properties it has as a plant. Bamboo is highly water absorbent, able to take up three times its weight in water. In bamboo fabric, this translates to an excellent wicking ability that will pull moisture away from the skin so that it can evaporate. For this reason, clothing made of bamboo fiber is often worn next to the skin.
Bamboo also has many antibacterial qualities, which bamboo fabric is apparently able to retain, even through multiple washings. This helps to reduce bacteria that thrive on clothing and cause unpleasant odors. It can also kill odor causing bacteria that live on skin, making the wearer and his or her clothing smell better. In addition, bamboo fabric has insulating properties and will keep the wearer cooler in summer and warmer in winter, similar to silk. In addition, the fabric is able to take bright dye colors well, and drape smoothly.
Bamboo is not a tree, but a grass. It is easily sustainable as it can handle drought as well as flooding. Farming bamboo is not harmful to the environment because it does not require any pesticides or herbicides. In addition, bamboo can be replanted each year. The plant actually adds nutrients to the soil, as opposed to cotton crop, which drains the soil of it’s nutrients. One of its greatest qualities, as far as textile production, is that it is very fast growing. Bamboo can grow 75 feet in 45 to 60 days.
