Dog Tips

Dusty, our yellow lab, started having problems with his anal glands.  The vet visit to evacuate the glands was not a pleasant experience, for anyone especially, Dusty.

I found a recipe which is high in fiber, and helps to naturally evacuate the anal glands.  Since making these muffins, our visits to the vet have gone from once a month to once every 3-4 months.

I give one to each of the dogs in the morning.  They all love the taste, and they’re very easy to make.

Pumpkin Muffin Recipe (high in fiber)

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup oatmeal

½ teaspoon baking soda

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

2/3 cup oil

2 cups pumpkin

4 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

Pinch of cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350º, fill each paper cup with one large spoonful of mixture.  Bake for 15-20 minutes.

If you're pet gets sprayed by a skunk, I just recently learned a new remedy that supposedly gets rid of the smell much better than the old tomato juice remedy.

Mix the following:

1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap

1 quart hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

Wet dog thoroughly and massage the above mixture into coat.  Leave on for five minutes then rinse thoroughly.  The larger the dog, the more mixture you will need to make.  Don't try to store these ingredients in a sealed container, it will cause an explosion.  Please also keep this mix away from your dog's eyes it will irritate them.

Photo is of Sage a client of mine who seems to attract skunks :)
