This page is going to be dedicated to helping parrot owners get to the information they need to help them understand what to do if their parrot escapes. I have been through it and the tools I found helped me so much I want to pass them along to help others get through this situation and have a successful conclusion like I did. A young man in my neighborhood found my African Grey within 34 hours of her escape within 1/4 mile of my home. People were so willing to help, the more eyes and ears you have the better!
The first site I would highly recommend going to is the Wasatch Avian Society. Their site really was unbelievably informative and gave me the direction I needed to prepare myself for the time when I would find her and enable myself to be ready and how to handle getting to her at her elevated level so she didn't escape again.
I've had a bit of a set back personally, On Friday, July 23rd my African Grey Parrot got away from me and I'm trying to find her. She flew away at 11:00AM from my backyard at 5530 West 4350 South, Hooper, Utah. She was headed East and is not used to flying so doesn't have a great deal of strength. I did what I had always warned all parrot owners not to let happen, I let her wings grow and I was careless. I am paying a huge price for this. I haven't ever in my entire life lost a pet and this is such a huge loss for me. I've posted flyers, I've got a huge network of people looking for her. Please keep your fingers crossed that I won't pay the ultimate price for my mistake.
SHE'S BEEN FOUND, SHE'S HOME, SHE'S DOING GREAT! A neighbor found her in a tree she talked to me all the way home she asked me what I was doing gave me kisses. THANK you to everyone who helped search for her over the last 33 hours! I was amazed at the kindness and support I received!
One of the main things I really want to share and that I've learned from losing and finding my African Grey Tigger for 34 hours is:
-
Don't give up hope! They can be found.
-
If they have full flight and haven't flown a lot, just hover crafting inside your house, they're close by probably within a block or two. Tigger was within 1/4 mile of my home I could have stood on my roof and seen the tree she was in.
-
That was toughest thing to find information on... how far can they get. I was looking way too far away. Because she wasn't a regular flier she pretty much landed in a tree and stayed waiting for me to find her.

When looking for your lost parrot, get out and walk you'll have a better chance of seeing and hearing them and you can talk to people and let them know what you are doing. It will amaze you how many people are willing to help. People want to help you!
In September of 2010 a young man in Sandy, Utah lost is smaller conure. I contacted him to share what I'd been through. He ended up finding his conure after it was lost for just under 2 weeks. What I told him was contact neighbors and walk around and tell everyone that will listen. Kids love to help and will go places adults won't. They're always exploring and they are honest and will tell on adults if they're lying. I've read so many stories of hope since finding my own parrot, there are also stories that are sad. I just want to help others have as much of a chance as I did in finding their parrot friends.
