When choosing a cage, size is a critical factor. Parrots should not be able to put their head through the bar spacing. The bars should also be strong enough that the bars can't be bent or broken by your parrot.
In 2026 I lost one of my African Grey parrots to metal toxicity. I previously had powder coated cages in my aviary. My cages were between 11-15 years old. Cages used to be steel with powder coated finishes and some were manufactured in the United States. Most powder coated cages are now wrought iron. Wrought iron isn't safe for parrots. Most cages are made in China and the coatings may be toxic to parrots. As powder coated cages get older, they will start to rust and chip. The rust, paint chips and exposed metal are toxic to parrots. I was unable to find a parrot safe paint to fix chipped and rusting cages.
I made the decision for the safety of my birds to start replacing the cages with Stainless Steel Cages. Caitec Featherland Stainless Steel cages are manufactured with 304 Stainless Steel which is a food grade quality stainless steel. When properly cared for these cages should last the lifetime of your parrot.
While exploring options, I learned some stainless steel parrot cages are being made with 201 Stainless Steel. Grade 304 stainless steel is generally better than 201 because it offers superior rust and corrosion resistance due to a higher nickel and chromium content. Make sure when shopping for a stainless steel parrot cage to get one that is 304 stainless steel.
